Created to Create

Since we are created in the image of God, it is only natural for us to be creative and discover new things. Some of us are creative artists, others explore the complexities of the universe and still others create new ways to make life easier for all. One of my favorite things in life is to see people discover who God created them to be. My good friend,Tara, married a wonderful man named Lance who owned his own house cleaning business and plays multiple musical instruments for worship gatherings. We had many discussions about how hard it is to be employed as a musician and support a family, but the drudgery of working a job that is not fulfilling can really wear a person down. We discussed many options and ideas of how he could be involved in a profession that used his creative abilities. He had some experience with wood working and heard about a Chainsaw Carving class after they moved to the Pacific NW. He took the class and discovered a talent he never knew he had – he can create amazing sculptures out of wood with a chainsaw!

I am amazed how after only three years working as a chainsaw carver, my friend, whom I like to call Sir Lance-Saw-Lot, is getting awards at competitions each year and carving new things all the time. We each have different gifts and skills and abilities and callings and passions. But I believe that when we create, we reflect God in a unique and powerful way. One of the first and foremost attributes of God is the ability to create. God created something out of nothing – in this God is unique. But as image bearers of the creator God, we can show others who God is when we are not afraid to try new things, be creative in ways we never thought of before, and discover who God created to be and fully embrace our destiny.
